Introduction

This article is meant to guide you through the process of removing unwanted intimate images or videos from the internet.  The content you’ve found of yourself is considered CSAM if the images or videos were taken when you were under 18. Handling and managing this content requires special reporting that every major social media company has instructions for. We will walk you through how to self-report on all of them below.

Terms and Definitions

Before we go into all the ways you can remove revenge porn, let’s define the three major terms you’ll come across in this guide:

Revenge porn: Revenge porn refers to any intimate images or videos that have been shared with the intent of causing harm or distress to the target.

Non-consensual intimate images: This refers to non-consensual pornographic material that compromises a person’s reputation. It’s usually sexually explicit in nature and is published on the internet.

DMCA: This is legislation (law in the U.S. Constitution) that protects individuals from non-consensual sharing of media on the internet. This means that if someone shares your intimate images or videos, you have the right to request immediate removal and for the site/platform owner to comply and remove the material. In order to remove the material, you need to file a DMCA takedown request, which sometimes is built into the platform itself. To learn more about the DMCA, click here.

There are two main ways you can remove revenge porn online: You can get help from child protection organizations like the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) or take down the images/videos on your own. In the sections that follow, we cover both. Feel free to jump to the section you need most using the navigation links listed below.
